Don’t take a caravan on the Pinnacles loop

Decision guide when the van, trailer or 7 m+ vehicle is still hitched — the desert loop is not the approach road, long-vehicle bays are at Discovery, and there is no camping in the park.

Best for: Anyone whose plan still tows onto the one-way sandy loop or treats Nambung as a campground

Decision first: do not drive the caravan, trailer or 7 m+ rig onto the Pinnacles Desert loop. If it is still hitched at the Discovery Centre, the honest move is the long-vehicle bays, then a walk to the lookout or a 2WD car on the loop. Towing “just to the first bay” is how people reverse against a one-way in soft sand.

Approach roads are sealed. That is not permission to treat the desert drive as a caravan park road. Official visitor guidance keeps long vehicles off the loop. [VERIFY] the live figure — this site is not the sign.

Plan B that still counts: unhitch; do Discovery + accessible lookout; or leave the van in Cervantes and take the car. There is no in-park campground to “wake up among the pillars.” Nearby holiday parks are outside Nambung.

The decision at the Discovery car park

If the van is still on the hitch, you are not “about to do the loop.” You are about to choose: unhitch and walk the lookout, or leave the long vehicle in the signed bays and take a car that fits the rule.

Success metric: you did not block the one-way, you did not reverse, and you did not camp. A lookout-only visit still counts.

Why “it’s only sand, we’ll be fine” fails

The loop is one-way with pull-over bays. Coaches use it. Soft sand and limestone do not love a trailer swing. People stop in the lane for photos. Your rig makes that worse.

Dieback hygiene still applies: unmarked tracks are management-only. A second set of wheel prints beside the loop is not a clever line — it is a scar.

Plan B menu that still counts

Plan B one — long-vehicle bay + Discovery Centre + accessible lookout. Done.

Plan B two — unhitch; 2WD car on the loop; van stays in the main car park.

Plan B three — leave the van in Cervantes; day-trip the desert in the car.

Plan B four — if you needed an official DBCA camp, that is a different park and Park Stay (never affiliated on this site). Nambung is day-use.

Official vs this page

Vehicle-length, trailer and bicycle rules live on Explore Parks WA, Trails WA and on-site signs. Alerts can add bans (the loop bicycle/moto closure is one). This page is training, not a permit.

What this site will never do: sell park entry, affiliate Park Stay, or tell you to camp among the pillars. What it will do: tell you to unhitch.

FAQ

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Can I unhitch at the first pull-over?

No. Use the Discovery Centre long-vehicle bays. The loop is one-way. Do not invent a three-point turn among limestone.

Is the 7 m rule definite?

It is the planning rule this guide repeats from official drive notes, marked [VERIFY]. If the live sign disagrees, the sign wins.

Can we camp behind the van in the car park?

No. There is no camping in Nambung National Park. Sleep in town. Do not treat a bay as an overnight pad.

What about motorbikes or e-bikes on the loop?

Treat the loop as closed to motorbikes and bicycles unless a live alert says otherwise (ban listed from 30 Sep 2025 through our 20 Aug 2026 check). That is separate from the trailer rule.
