Itineraries

These plans are for real Perth day trips and Cervantes stays — drive time, heat, vehicle rules and energy included — not a “do everything” list. Pick the one that matches your group, then open it for a timeline, packing notes and what to skip. Print from any plan page, or grab the free day-trip checklist (PDF) / practical planner anytime.

Every itinerary defers to Explore Parks WA / DBCA for track status and alerts. Hard walks only appear where the plan names them — and only when official status is open.

Which plan fits you?

  • Perth day-trip — Pinnacles loop first; skip the lake or beach if you need the drive home.
  • Cervantes half-day — morning desert, then lake or one beach.
  • Sunrise / sunset — for photos; confirm hours, don’t assume night access.
  • Family easy — accessible lookout + Lake Thetis; skip long sand in heat.
  • Wildflower day — still Pinnacles-first; heath is a bonus layer.

If two plans both “sound good,” pick the shorter one. You can always add something on the ground; you can’t make more daylight on the highway home.

Limestone pinnacles on yellow sand in the Pinnacles Desert, Nambung National Park, Western Australia

Full calendar day (about 2 hours each way + 1–3 hours on site)

Perth day-trip: Pinnacles first

First visit from Perth by car or commercial tour

The usual Perth plan: early Indian Ocean Drive, Discovery Centre, one-way desert loop with photo stops, optional lookout walk, then enough time to get home — without pretending you can also do Lake Thetis, Hangover Bay and sunset on the same late start.

Lake Thetis near Cervantes, Western Australia — saline lake and shoreline used for the stromatolite / thrombolite boardwalk experience

4–6 hours from town

Half-day from Cervantes: loop + lake or beach

Overnight visitors who already have the desert as a morning, then a quieter second stop

Pinnacles loop while it is cooler, then either Lake Thetis boardwalk or one beach (Hangover Bay or Kangaroo Point) — not both plus a late lunch plus a second desert lap.

Pinnacles Desert near Cervantes, Nambung National Park — late light on limestone and sand

2–4 hours on the desert (plus drives)

Photography: sunrise or late-afternoon Pinnacles

Photographers and anyone who hates coach light

Light is the reason to stay. Crowds and heat drop at the edges of the day. Confirm last-entry or centre hours — don’t assume 24-hour access.

White sand dunes at Hangover Bay near Cervantes, Nambung National Park coast

Full day from Perth or Cervantes

Wildflower-season day (September–October)

Mild weather + kwongan / heath bloom — still a Pinnacles-first day

Best overall visitor window: milder air and flowering heath. The Pinnacles remain the hero. Lesueur is a related-park suggestion, not a Nambung substitute. Crowds rise in this season — start early.

Close limestone columns in Nambung National Park’s Pinnacles Desert

Half day (skip long sandy sections in heat)

Family-easy: lookout + Lake Thetis

Mixed ages, prams on the accessible lookout section, educational lake stop

Discovery Centre + accessible first section of Desert View / Pinnacles View Lookout + Lake Thetis boardwalk. Skip long sandy Class 3 sections in heat. No camping stories.
