Family-easy: lookout + Lake Thetis

Distance is not the limiter for families here — heat, climbing temptation and toilets are. Use the Class 1 lookout as the desert product. Save the sandy 1.2 km for a cooler year.

Best from Cervantes so you are not also managing a two-hour reverse with wilted kids. A Perth day-trip can still use this shape if you leave early and skip the lake.

Talk before you arrive: do not climb the limestone; do not touch the living rocks at the lake. Ice cream in town is a valid next step.

There is no camping in the park. Long vehicles stay at the Discovery Centre. Dogs are not permitted — official kennels at Cervantes Ranger Station are not a park-walk loophole [VERIFY].

Timeline

  1. Before you leave town

    Water for every person

Hats, snacks, closed-toe shoes. Agree the lookout is the desert product. If anyone is already hot in the car, skip the sandy continuation before you even park.

  2. Desert

    Centre + lookout, then stop

Toilets at Discovery. Pay or show a pass. Accessible path to the platform. Do not climb. Photograph from the path. If energy remains and it is not a hot afternoon, the sandy Class 3 is optional — not required to “count.”

  3. Lake Thetis

    Boardwalk only

Separate car park near Cervantes. Stay on the path. Talk about “don’t touch the living rocks.” Leave before anyone wilts. This is not a swimming lake.

  4. Town

    Reset

Cervantes lunch / ice cream. Do not add Hangover Bay if kids are already cooked. A town beach is outside park rules as a town — still use ordinary ocean sense.

Parking & access tips

  • Long vehicles still cannot do the loop — lookout from the main precinct.
  • Lake Thetis is a different car park — budget the short drive from town.
  • Coach peaks at the desert: early is calmer with kids.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Hangover Bay if kids are already cooked
  • Full sandy Desert View Walk
  • A Perth reverse after a late lake stop

Extra tips

  • Mixed ages who will use the platform as success
  • Prams / wheels on the accessible lookout section — [VERIFY] current access
  • Anyone who wants the lake classroom without a forced sandy loop

Decision gates

  • If someone starts climbing: leave the desert
  • If someone leaves the lake path: leave the lake
  • If heat hits: skip the sandy 1.2 km without a debate

What success looks like

  • Nobody climbed a pinnacle
  • Nobody touched a stromatolite
  • Ice cream still happened

  • Lake Thetis loop & boardwalkA saline lake near Cervantes with living stromatolites / thrombolites. Stay on the path and boardwalk. Do not touch the structures. About 1.7 km south-east of Cervantes — not inside the Pinnacles loop.
