Half-day from Cervantes: loop + lake or beach
Guide updated · verify Explore Parks WA / DBCA the morning you go
Pinnacles loop while it is cooler, then either Lake Thetis boardwalk or one beach (Hangover Bay or Kangaroo Point) — not both plus a late lunch plus a second desert lap.

Sleeping in Cervantes buys you a sane clock. Use it. Morning desert, then one second landscape. Town lunch is allowed.
Camping is still not permitted inside the park — you are a day visitor from town. Holiday parks in Cervantes are not “Nambung camping.”
The second landscape is a choice, not a collection. Lake Thetis is the quieter classroom. Hangover Bay is ocean skill and picnic. Do not do both plus sunset unless you already know you have a full idle afternoon.
Verify Explore Parks WA and alerts the morning you go. Discovery hours are commonly 9:30 am–4:30 pm except Christmas Day — [VERIFY].
Track status, weather, fees and closures change — verify on Explore Parks WA / DBCA before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. There is no camping inside Nambung National Park.

Timeline
Night before (Cervantes)
Name the second stop
Say it out loud: morning = Pinnacles. Afternoon = Lake Thetis or one beach — not “we’ll see.” Pack water, hats, closed-toe shoes, and swimmers only if the beach is the named second stop. Screenshot alerts on town Wi-Fi.
Morning
Pinnacles while cool
Discovery Centre, entry, loop, optional Desert View Walk. Carry water even though town is close. Long vehicles still stay off the loop. Do not climb. If the morning already ran long, skip the sandy 1.2 km.
Late morning / afternoon
Pick one: lake or beach
Lake Thetis for boardwalk and stromatolites (stay on the path — own car park near town). Hangover Bay for picnic/swim if wind and ocean skill match. Grey or Kangaroo Point only if that was the plan all along. One beach. Not three.
Back to town
Do not add a third landscape
Cervantes food and a swim at a town beach (outside park rules as a town) beat a rushed extra park site. If you still have energy, that is for tomorrow’s light, not another loop lap.

Parking & access tips
- Lake Thetis has its own car park — not a Pinnacles bay.
- Beach car parks: follow signs; don’t park on the dunes.
- Discovery Centre long-vehicle bays if you are towing — still not the loop.
- Fuel in Cervantes before you photograph.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Second beach
- Full sandy Desert View if the morning already ran long
- A third park site after a late lunch
- Sunset on the desert if anyone is already cooked
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- People who already booked a Cervantes (or Jurien) bed
- Groups who did the Perth reverse once and hated it
- Families who want a desert morning and a quieter afternoon
Decision gates
- If the desert morning ran hot: skip the sandy walk and pick the lake over the ocean
- If wind wrecks the snorkel: picnic only, or switch to Lake Thetis
- If anyone leaves the boardwalk: leave the lake
What success looks like
- Two landscapes, not five
- Town lunch without a meltdown
- Energy left for tomorrow’s light if you stayed a second night

- Pinnacles Desert Lookout & DriveWhat most people come for: pay or show your pass at the Pinnacles Desert Discovery, then drive (or walk) a one-way loop through limestone pillars on yellow sand. Pull-over bays, lookouts and short sandy walks — not a 4WD park and not a multi-day hike.
- Lake Thetis loop & boardwalkA saline lake near Cervantes with living stromatolites / thrombolites. Stay on the path and boardwalk. Do not touch the structures. About 1.7 km south-east of Cervantes — not inside the Pinnacles loop.
- Hangover BayWide sandy beach on the Nambung coast with snorkelling, swimming, windsurfing and surfing in adjacent Jurien Bay Marine Park. Gas BBQs, picnic shelters and toilets are commonly listed — [VERIFY] the live facility list. Respect marine sanctuary and sea-lion breeding-island rules.
