Cervantes & the Turquoise Coast approach
Gateway town for beds, fuel, food and lobster — plus Jurien Bay as the larger hub. This is where you sleep. The park is a day-use landscape with no in-park camping.
- Best for: Overnight bases, half-days that include the lake and a beach, Coral Coast onward travel
- Time: Use as a base, not as a “park replacement”
- Cervantes sits on Indian Ocean Drive. Pinnacles turn-off is south of town; Lake Thetis is close. Jurien Bay is the next larger centre north.

Where to sleep (outside the park)
Cervantes is the closest useful town — fuel, food, lobster and beds. Jurien Bay has more services and the Turquoise Coast Visitor Centre. Lancelin sits south toward Perth / dunes. Perth itself is the day-trip origin, not a substitute for a dawn Pinnacles start unless you leave very early.
Official: no camping inside Nambung National Park. Nearby Park Stay or private holiday parks are a different product. This site may use affiliate stay links for towns; park camping and official Park Stay are never affiliated. Stay hub: Where to stay.
Indian Ocean Drive reality
Sealed the whole way from Perth. 2WD is the standard. Budget about two hours each way as a planning range, not a guarantee in holiday traffic. Wildlife at dawn and dusk. Fuel in Cervantes and Jurien Bay before you photograph.
There is no practical public transport to the loop. Commercial Perth–Pinnacles tours are a separate product with their own tickets and clocks — useful if you do not want to drive, not a substitute for checking alerts yourself. Tours hub: Perth–Pinnacles tours.
Day-trip vs overnight — pick the clock
A Perth day-trip works if you leave early, do the desert properly, and protect the return. It fails if you also invent the lake, Hangover Bay and sunset. Overnight in Cervantes buys cooler morning light and a second landscape.
The honest split: Perth guests = Pinnacles-first and go home. Cervantes guests = morning loop, then lake or one beach. Full timelines: Perth day-trip and Cervantes half-day.
Town is not the park
Cervantes streets, cafés and holiday parks sit outside park management. Ordinary town parking and business hours apply. The national park starts at signed park roads — Pinnacles south of town, Lake Thetis close by, beaches on signed coastal spurs.
Ranger Station Cervantes phone commonly published: (08) 9688 6000. Turquoise Coast Visitor Centre Jurien Bay: (08) 9652 2425. Discovery Centre at the Pinnacles: (08) 9652 7913. [VERIFY] all on official pages. Kennels at the ranger station are an official visitor note — not a dog-in-park loophole.
Yued Country and a decent visit
Nambung sits on Yued Country. This unofficial guide is not a Traditional Owner site and does not speak for Yued people. Read the visiting Yued Country article, stay on tracks, do not climb the limestone, and treat cultural and natural heritage as more than a backdrop.
Dieback (Phytophthora) is a real reason to stay on marked roads and trails — including between town and the desert. Article: stay on the track.

Full calendar day (about 2 hours each way + 1–3 hours on site)
Perth day-trip: Pinnacles first
The usual Perth plan: early Indian Ocean Drive, Discovery Centre, one-way desert loop with photo stops, optional lookout walk, then enough time to get home — without pretending you can also do Lake Thetis, Hangover Bay and sunset on the same late start.
4–6 hours from town
Half-day from Cervantes: loop + lake or beach
Pinnacles loop while it is cooler, then either Lake Thetis boardwalk or one beach (Hangover Bay or Kangaroo Point) — not both plus a late lunch plus a second desert lap.
Full day from Perth or Cervantes
Wildflower-season day (September–October)
Best overall visitor window: milder air and flowering heath. The Pinnacles remain the hero. Lesueur is a related-park suggestion, not a Nambung substitute. Crowds rise in this season — start early.

FAQ — Cervantes / approach
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Is Cervantes in the national park?
No. It is the nearest town. Use it for beds and supplies. The Pinnacles sit south via the signed park roads. Lake Thetis is close to town as its own stop.
Can I do Nambung without staying overnight?
Yes — it is a classic Perth day-trip if you leave early and protect the return. Overnight in Cervantes simply buys you sunrise light and a calmer clock for a second landscape.
Where is the closest camping?
Not inside Nambung National Park. Look at town holiday parks and any official Park Stay sites outside this park. Book those on official or commercial town channels — we never affiliate park camping fees.
Is there a bus to the Pinnacles?
There is no practical public transport to the desert loop for a casual visitor. Drive, join a commercial Perth–Pinnacles tour, or stay in Cervantes and self-drive the short hop. Check the tour operator’s inclusions — park fees are still official.
