Things to do in Nambung

Most first visits revolve around the Pinnacles Desert loop, with an optional Desert View Walk or Lake Thetis from Cervantes. Beaches such as Hangover Bay are a separate stop — don’t bolt them onto a late Perth start. You don’t need every site on a first visit.

Some stay, tour and gear links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Park fees, Parks Passes and official DBCA / Park Stay bookings are never affiliated.

Day one rule

Pinnacles loop first. Do not collect lake, beach and sunset on a late Perth start. One extra landscape only if you already have a Cervantes clock.

Heat / energy bail-out

Stopping at the lookout is a complete visit. Skip the sandy 1.2 km in January heat. Bail-outs are competence, not failure.

Vehicle filter

Over 7 m, caravan or trailer: Discovery Centre car park only — not the loop. Motorbikes and bicycles are banned on the loop (check alerts). This is not a 4WD park for the usual visit.

  1. 1

    Pinnacles Desert Lookout & Drive

Icon drive · 2WD loop · coaches midday

The classic first visit: Discovery Centre (toilets, shade, geology displays), pay or show a Parks Pass, then the one-way 2WD sandy loop with pull-over bays. Typical 1–3 hours on site. Do not climb the limestone. Long vehicles, caravans and trailers stay in the Discovery Centre car park — not on the loop.

  2. 2

    Desert View Walk

    1.5 km · Class 1 then 3 · sand

Accessible formed path to a lookout, then optional sandy Class 3 among the pillars. Lookout-only is a complete visit in heat. The sandy continuation is glare, photo-stop time and little shade — turn around while the group is still happy. Stay on the marked trail.

  3. 3

    Lake Thetis

    Easy · educational · quieter

Saline lake near Cervantes with living stromatolites / thrombolites, a boardwalk and an easy loop. Stay on the path — do not touch the structures. This is a separate car park from the desert, not a Pinnacles pull-over. Excellent second stop if you already sleep in town; easy to skip on a tight Perth reverse.

  4. 4

Hangover Bay, Kangaroo Point & Grey

Coast · picnic · ocean skill required

White-sand coast after the limestone: Hangover Bay for swim/snorkel/picnic, Kangaroo Point for fishing and boating, Grey south of the Pinnacles. Pick one beach. Ocean conditions are real — rips and wind, not a pool. Jurien Bay Marine Park rules apply offshore. Do not bolt a swim onto a late Perth start.

  5. 5

    Photography (light, not climbing)

Sunrise / sunset · stay on tracks

Early or late light, fewer buses, silhouettes on yellow sand. Midday is valid and busier. Do not climb, sit or stand on pinnacles, and do not invent social trails between formations. Confirm Discovery hours and any last-entry rule — do not assume the loop is open all night.

  6. 6

    Wildflowers (August–October)

Spring · crowds rise · mild weather

Official park wording: vegetation bursts into flower from August to October, with wattles stretching horizon to horizon. That is a bonus layer on a Pinnacles-first day, not a reason to skip the desert. Stay on tracks (dieback). Crowds rise in this season. Lesueur is a related park nearby — not a Nambung substitute.

  7. 7

Yued Country & stay on the track

Respect · dieback · no climbing

Nambung sits on Yued Country. This unofficial guide does not speak for Traditional Owners. Stay on marked roads and trails (Phytophthora dieback), do not climb the limestone, and treat the desert as more than a backdrop. Distance and quiet around wildlife; never feed.

  8. 8

Cervantes, Jurien Bay & Perth day-trips

Gateway towns · no in-park camping

There is no camping inside Nambung National Park. Sleep in Cervantes (closest), Jurien Bay (more services) or treat Perth as a genuine early-start day-trip. Town streets are not the park. Fuel in town — do not assume a bowser at the Discovery Centre. Optional commercial Perth–Pinnacles tours are a separate product; park fees stay official.
