Pinnacles Desert Lookout & Drive

Area: Pinnacles Desert & Discovery Centre

What most people come for: pay or show your pass at the Pinnacles Desert Discovery, then drive (or walk) a one-way loop through limestone pillars on yellow sand. Pull-over bays, lookouts and short sandy walks — not a 4WD park and not a multi-day hike.

Do not pair: Don’t try to rush the full Desert View Walk, Lake Thetis and a Hangover Bay swim onto a late Perth departure. The loop is the main event; everything else is optional.

Turnaround: This is a one-way loop with many pull-overs. If you need to cut it short, skip extra walks and finish the loop — don’t drive against the arrows. Long vehicles stay at the Discovery Centre car park.

  • Arriving at midday in January without water
  • Taking a caravan onto the loop
  • Climbing a pinnacle for a photo
  • Treating this as a 4WD or overnight camping park
  • One-way unsealed sandy loop, 2WD-suitable if under 7 m and no trailer — plus optional short walks from pull-overs
  • Typical 1–3 hours on site including Discovery Centre and photo stops (most visitors 1–2 hours)
  • About 4.3 km drive (Trails WA); Explore Parks also describes a ~4.5 km drive trail — [VERIFY] live official figure
  • Effort: easy
  • Best for: First-timers, Perth day-trips, mixed-ability groups, photography from pull-overs

Distance, grade, time, vehicle rules, hours and open/closed status change — always verify with Explore Parks WA / DBCA (exploreparks.dbca.wa.gov.au) and alerts.dbca.wa.gov.au before you go.

Where you start

Pinnacles Desert Discovery Centre car park

Sealed approach from Indian Ocean Drive via Pinnacles Road. Long-vehicle bays at the Discovery Centre. Vehicles longer than 7 m, caravans and trailers are not permitted on the loop — leave them in the main car park. [VERIFY] live vehicle rule on Explore Parks / Trails WA.

How to get there

  1. Drive north from Perth on sealed Indian Ocean Drive (~200 km / ~2 hours in ordinary traffic — [VERIFY] your own timing). Turn to the Pinnacles via sealed Pinnacles Road. Nearest town is Cervantes.
  2. There is no practical public transport. Private vehicle or a commercial Perth–Pinnacles tour are the realistic modes.
  3. Pay the standard WA park entry fee (or display a valid Parks Pass) as directed at the Discovery Centre / gatehouse. Walkers and cyclists are typically not charged vehicle entry — [VERIFY] live fee table. This site does not sell passes.
  4. Discovery Centre hours are commonly listed as 9:30 am–4:30 pm daily except Christmas Day — [VERIFY] on official / local pages. Don’t assume night opening or a night closure unless that’s published.
  5. No dogs in the park. Screenshot Explore Parks WA, alerts.dbca.wa.gov.au and an offline map before you leave Perth or Cervantes.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Discovery Centre first: toilets, shade, interpretive displays (geology, cultural and natural heritage), then start the one-way loop from the same precinct.
  2. Drive slowly. The surface is unsealed but typically firm sand — 2WD is the advertised standard for vehicles under 7 m without a trailer. Use pull-over bays; do not stop in the traffic lane or drive off the marked track (dieback hygiene and formation damage).
  3. Get out at signed stops. Short walks among formations are optional. Do not climb, sit or stand on pinnacles — they can be top-heavy and unstable; injuries have occurred.
  4. Desert View / Pinnacles View Lookout is the “if you only have 90 minutes” photo stop: Discovery Centre + lookout + two pull-overs beats racing every bay.
  5. You can complete the one-way loop at any pace. There are no remote “committed” sections like a gorge circuit — bail-out is “skip the next walk and finish the loop.”

Why this is the first-visit path

If someone says they are “doing the Pinnacles,” they usually mean this loop: limestone pillars on yellow sand, a short interpretive stop, and photos from pull-over bays. Explore Parks WA frames it as thousands of limestone pillars in a stark desert — one of Australia’s most photographed park landscapes — about two hours north of Perth.

It is not a wilderness multi-day. Typical time on site is 1–3 hours (most people 1–2 hours). The usual mistake is treating it as a 4WD trip, a camping park, or a place to scramble the formations.

How the day actually runs

Typical order: Discovery Centre, pay or show your pass, a short look inside, then the one-way loop with photo pull-overs, optional Desert View Walk / lookout, then leave. That’s the usual Perth day-trip and tour-bus pattern.

Start and finish are the same sealed car park. Long vehicles, caravans and trailers stay there. The loop is commonly described as about 4.3 km (Trails WA) or about 4.5 km (Explore Parks wording) — check the official figure on the day.

The surface is unsealed but typically firm. You do not need 4WD for the standard Nambung experience. Drive slowly; use bays; keep off vegetation.

If you only have 90 minutes

Discovery Centre + Desert View / Pinnacles View Lookout + two pull-overs. Skip the full sandy walk, skip Lake Thetis, skip the beaches. That still counts as visiting Nambung.

Leave time for the drive back to Perth. Indian Ocean Drive is sealed and easy, but a late start plus every photo bay plus a beach swim is how groups hit dusk tired.

Hazards that are real here (and ones that are not)

Do not climb, sit or stand on pinnacles. Official visitor guidance treats them as unstable and culturally/naturally significant. Heat and UV are the other everyday risks — no shade, summer afternoons, flies. Carry water even if the drive feels “just a car thing.”

Stay on marked roads and trails. Unmarked tracks are management-only and risk spreading Phytophthora dieback. Clean vehicles.

There is no snow and no crocodiles in this park. There are no water crossings on the standard drive. Fire risk can be high December–March; no open fires (gas appliances OK where facilities exist). Check emergency.wa.gov.au.

Mobile coverage: official guidance is that without coverage you cannot call 000. Download Emergency+ before you leave town so a GPS location is ready. A PLB is optional extra for longer coastal walking — not a requirement for the Discovery Centre car park.

What to pair (and what not to)

Strong pairs: Desert View Walk if energy and heat allow; Lake Thetis as a quieter second stop from Cervantes; Hangover Bay if you have a half-day and want a swim after the sand.

Weak pairs: a multi-day plan that needs camping in the park (camping is not permitted inside Nambung). Official nearby camping is outside the park boundary — don’t treat it as Nambung camping, and we don’t sell Park Stay bookings.

Yued Country

We recognise and acknowledge Yued people as the Traditional Owners of Nambung National Park. Visitors are guests. Stay on marked surfaces. Do not climb the formations. This site is independent and unofficial — it does not speak for Traditional Owner groups. Follow official rules and on-site signs.

Extra tips

  • Arrive early or late to miss mid-morning to mid-afternoon coach and tour-bus peaks, weekends, school holidays and September–October wildflower season.
  • Best light is early morning or late afternoon. Midday is harsher, hotter and busier.
  • Carry water, a hat and sunscreen. There is no reliable drinking water on the desert loop.
  • If you only have 90 minutes: skip Hangover Bay and Lake Thetis; do Discovery + lookout + two pull-overs.
  • DBCA park alert (still listed 20 Aug 2026): the Pinnacles Desert Loop Drive is closed to all motorbikes and bicycles from 30 September 2025. Re-check alerts.dbca.wa.gov.au before you plan to ride.

Often paired with Desert View Walk— only if energy and weather allow.
