Hangover Bay

Area: Hangover Bay, Kangaroo Point & Grey

Wide sandy beach on the Nambung coast with snorkelling, swimming, windsurfing and surfing in adjacent Jurien Bay Marine Park. Gas BBQs, picnic shelters and toilets are commonly listed — [VERIFY] the live facility list. Respect marine sanctuary and sea-lion breeding-island rules.

Do not pair: Do not pair Hangover Bay with Lake Thetis and a full sandy Desert View Walk on a late Perth start. One extra landscape after the loop.

Turnaround: Agree a leave-the-beach time before you unpack. Automatic reverse: rising wind, anyone out of their depth, a fire ban you did not check, or a Perth clock that is already late.

  • Treating it as a pool after a hot desert morning
  • Beach-hopping Hangover, Kangaroo Point and Grey until dark
  • Open fires or parking on dunes
  • Beach and picnic area — not a marked long walk
  • 1–3 hours if you swim or picnic; a 20-minute look if you are only stretching the legs
  • Short beach access from the car park (site-dependent) — [VERIFY] facilities on the official site page
  • Effort: easy
  • Best for: Swim / snorkel / picnic after the Pinnacles; families who want shade shelters and gas BBQs

Where you start

Hangover Bay day-use area

Coastal site in Nambung National Park, separate from the desert loop. Same park-entry honesty: confirm fees on Explore Parks WA. Carry water even if BBQs exist.

How to get there

  1. Follow park / local signs from the Cervantes / Indian Ocean Drive corridor to Hangover Bay. Do not use the one-way desert loop as a shortcut to the beach.
  2. Same park-entry honesty as the desert: confirm fees on Explore Parks WA. This site does not sell tickets.
  3. No practical public transport. Check alerts for seasonal closures or fire restrictions.
  4. Fuel and supplies in Cervantes or Jurien Bay. Do not assume a kiosk or drinking water at the bay.
  5. Screenshot emergency.wa.gov.au in summer and the official Hangover Bay facility list before you leave town.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Picnic, swim or snorkel only where conditions and your group’s ocean skill match. This is a real beach, not a pool.
  2. Use gas BBQs if provided and operating. No open fires. Pack out rubbish. Do not park on dunes.
  3. Wind wrecks a snorkel plan faster than a brochure admits. Have a desert or lake Plan B.
  4. Jurien Bay Marine Park sits offshore — sanctuary zones and sea-lion breeding-island access restrictions apply. Follow official marine-park rules; this site does not map every zone.
  5. If the Pinnacles already ran long or hot, skip the swim. Town lunch still counts.

What to expect

Hangover Bay is a beach and picnic area, not a marked long walk. Official pages describe swimming, snorkelling, surfing and picnic facilities. Gas BBQs, picnic shelters and toilets are commonly listed, with some paths described as wheelchair-friendly — [VERIFY] the live facility list.

Typical time is 1–3 hours if you swim or picnic; 20 minutes if you only stretch your legs after the desert. The limestone is still the main event for most first visits. This is the extra stop when you already have a Cervantes clock.

Separate from the desert loop

Do not use the one-way Pinnacles drive as a shortcut to the beach. Follow signed coastal access from the Cervantes / Indian Ocean Drive corridor. Same park-entry honesty as the rest of Nambung.

Kangaroo Point (fishing/boating) and Grey (south of the Pinnacles, swim/fish) are sibling day-use sites. Pick one. Three beaches is a different holiday.

Printable pairing: Cervantes half-day. Area guide: Hangover Bay, Kangaroo Point & Grey.

Ocean skill, marine park, fires

This is Jurien Bay Marine Park water. Rips, wind and swell are real. If you are not a confident ocean swimmer, picnic and paddle at the edge of skill — or skip the swim. This unofficial guide does not map every sanctuary zone. Read official marine-park pages before you snorkel, fish or approach islands. Sea-lion breeding sites have access restrictions.

No open fires. Use provided gas BBQs where they exist and are operating. Check emergency.wa.gov.au in summer. Dogs are not permitted in the park.

Hazards & reverse

Sun, limited drinking water, dune damage if you park off the signed area, thin coverage for 000. Carry water even if BBQs exist.

Automatic reverse: rising wind, anyone out of their depth, a fire ban you did not check, or a Perth reverse that would put you on Indian Ocean Drive at dusk wildlife hour. The bay will still be here next Cervantes night.

Extra tips

  • Quieter than the Pinnacles midday. A good “we already did the limestone” afternoon from Cervantes.
  • Kangaroo Point (fishing / boating / picnic) and Grey (swim / fish, south of the Pinnacles) are sibling beaches — pick one, do not beach-hop until dark.
  • Carry water even if BBQs exist. Confirm toilets and shelter on the official site page for your date.
  • Printable pairing: Cervantes half-day itinerary — morning desert, then lake or one beach.

Often paired with Pinnacles Drive— only if energy and weather allow.
