Lake Thetis loop & boardwalk

Area: Lake Thetis

A saline lake near Cervantes with living stromatolites / thrombolites. Stay on the path and boardwalk. Do not touch the structures. About 1.7 km south-east of Cervantes — not inside the Pinnacles loop.

Do not pair: Do not pair Lake Thetis with a full sandy Desert View Walk and Hangover Bay on a late Perth day-trip. Pick one extra landscape.

Turnaround: The first boardwalk section is the honest turnaround. The loop is easy, but heat and boredom still punish a forced full circuit.

  • Leaving the boardwalk for a closer photo
  • Assuming the lake is a Pinnacles pull-over and wasting time hunting it on the one-way loop
  • Arriving with no water because “it’s only a short walk”
  • Easy educational loop; first ~300 m boardwalk commonly described as universally accessible — [VERIFY] current access
  • 45–90 minutes including reading signs and not rushing the boardwalk
  • About 1.5 km circumference (visitor-guide planning figure) — [VERIFY]
  • Effort: easy
  • Best for: Quieter second stop, families, geology / “dawn of life” interest, heat Plan B vs the desert sand

Where you start

Lake Thetis car park, near Cervantes

Separate from the Pinnacles Desert loop. Do not expect this lake at the Discovery Centre. Picnic tables; carry water — facilities are minimal compared with Hangover Bay.

How to get there

  1. From Cervantes, follow signed local access toward Lake Thetis (~1.7 km south-east — [VERIFY] exact approach). This is not a spur off the one-way Pinnacles desert loop.
  2. Park in the signed Lake Thetis car park. Picnic tables exist; do not assume drinking water or the same toilet standard as the Discovery Centre.
  3. Park entry: confirm on Explore Parks WA whether your approach is treated as the same Nambung day-use / entry system. This site does not sell tickets.
  4. No practical public transport. If you came on a Perth–Pinnacles coach, ask whether Lake Thetis is actually included — many tours never leave the desert precinct.
  5. Screenshot Explore Parks, alerts and an offline map in Cervantes before you lose the habit of coverage.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Walk the signed boardwalk first. The first section is commonly described as accessible — [VERIFY] current access. That is a complete visit for mixed-ability groups.
  2. Read the interpretive signs. Photograph from the path only. Do not step on, touch or “test” the stromatolites / thrombolites.
  3. If you continue around the easy loop, stay on the formed surface. One set of footprints off the path becomes a social trail.
  4. Talk to kids before you arrive: “don’t touch the living rocks” is easier than a scramble at the rail.
  5. When anyone is hot or bored, leave. Town lunch in Cervantes still counts. You are not failing the lake by skipping a full circuit.

What to expect

Explore Parks WA describes stromatolites at Lake Thetis — rock-like living structures that give a window on early life. Visitor notes also refer to thrombolites. Stay with official wording. Keep your feet on the boardwalk.

It is quieter and more educational than the Pinnacles, close to Cervantes, easy underfoot on the first boardwalk section. Typical time is 45–90 minutes if you actually read the signs. A 15-minute “we saw a lake” dash is a waste of the stop.

This is not a swimming lake and not a second desert. The job is path, signs, photos from the rail, then leave.

Separate stop, separate car park

Do not treat Lake Thetis as a pull-over on the one-way Pinnacles drive. It is about 1.7 km south-east of Cervantes with its own car park. Build it into a Cervantes half-day or skip it on a tight Perth reverse.

Picnic tables exist. Drinking water and toilets are thinner than Hangover Bay or the Discovery Centre. Carry water. Plan toilets in town or at the desert precinct.

Boardwalk ethic

Do not touch, walk on, or step closer “just for a photo.” Official visitor guidance is to protect living microbial communities. One shortcut becomes a social trail.

The first boardwalk section is commonly described as universally accessible — [VERIFY] current access and any works. The circumference loop is an easy walk for most people who can manage a formed path in heat.

Hazards & reverse

Sun, little shade, fragile structures, thin facilities. Same 000 / Emergency+ honesty as the rest of Nambung: coverage is not a guarantee.

Automatic reverse: anyone leaving the path, heat distress, or a Perth clock that is already late. The lake will still be here next time you sleep in Cervantes.

Extra tips

  • Excellent pair after a cooler morning at the Pinnacles if you are based in Cervantes.
  • Poor pair if you are already late for a Perth return — skip it rather than rushing both.
  • Carry water. Shade is limited.
  • This is not a swimming lake. Hangover Bay is the swim product when ocean skill matches.

Often paired with Pinnacles Drive— only if energy and weather allow.
